Updated HSE guidance for First Aid in the Work Place

What's on your mind?
Updated HSE

Last month the HSE updated their guidance around First Aid requirements in the workplace and being the lovely person I am (😊 ) I wanted to share them with you to make it as easy as possible to understand..

  • Who are the HSE?

HSE stands for Health & Safety Executive, which is the UK’s national regulator of workplace health and safety. They are dedicated to protect people and places and aim to help everyone lead safer and healthier lives. The HSE have a number of Health and Safety acts and regulation which must be followed in the workplace and last month two if them were updated.

  • Documents which were updated:

L74 – Guidance on The Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 – https://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/priced/l74.pdf

GEIS 3 – Selecting a First Aid Training Provider – A Guide for Employers – https://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/geis3.pdf

  • So what do these documents talk about?

There are two main updates to be aware of if:

  1. The HSE are now putting a stronger emphasis on employers considering employee mental health in their first aid needs assessment.

It may also be helpful to have people trained to identify and understand mental ill health symptoms who are able to support someone who is experiencing a mental health issue. You may decide that someone with an FAW or EFAW qualification is already able to provide initial support and reassurance to a worker experiencing an acute mental health episode, but you should consider if any further training is required. You should be satisfied that they:

  • Know how to access professional help if necessary
  • Can act promptly, safely and effectively until that help is available

A large number of businesses have been getting in touch with me regularly over the last few years, wanting to train teams or members of teams in First Aid for Mental Health as they can see how beneficial it can be to the workplace, but now the HSE have formally put a stronger emphasis on it.

The First Aid for Mental Health course is a one day in person / half day distance learning course, which gives a fantastic array of skills to help you understand mental health more and feel better equipped you could start a conversation with someone whose mental health you are worried about. (I run this course both privately for teams or as a book on course for individuals who want to learn more).

I know I am biased, but I promise you it is a fantastic course! Not only is it a great course to equip employees with skills to support their team, it is good for a company’s pocket too. A study by the Mental Health Foundation & London School of Economic & Political Science found that workplaces who invested in Mental Health programmes could expect a ROI of £5 for every £1 invested.

2. The HSE have improved their guidance to employers around selecting a first aid training provider and made it more simple to understand.

Within the document it talks to you about what to look for in a first aid provider, what to ask to make sure they are legitimate and what to think about when choosing the right qualification for your team.

Finding a good reputable first aid provider is really important to get the most out of the session you book for yourself or your team. Anecdotally I am regularly told at courses that the last instructor they had read through slides and didn’t get them trying techniques out fully as well as made the session dry and boring.

As well as being qualified to teach a range of regulated and accredited First Aid, Paediatric and First Aid for Mental Health courses with a Level 3 Award in Education and Training, I also pride myself on making my courses fun, engaging and interactive so you leave with the qualification you need but also with more confidence you could help someone in a first aid situation if needed.

I am across social media (see below for details) and send an email list newsletter, not just to give extra hints, tips and refreshers so you keep your knowledge fresh, but also to showcase my standards and abilities to provide you with the best basic first aid course possible. Integrity is important to me and I am please to say when I read the updated guidance I am ticking all the boxes!
